Baluster count is governed by the gap, not the baluster: most codes require a gap small enough that a 4-inch sphere cannot pass through. Enter the rail run and your spacing, and this calculator returns the number of balusters, the true gap after allowing for baluster width, and the material cost.
How many balusters your railing needs, and the gap between them.
N = ⌈run ÷ (gap + width)⌉ actual gap = (run − N × width) ÷ (N + 1)
All values are converted to inches first. The 4-inch sphere rule comes from the IRC and applies to the gap between balusters and between the bottom rail and the deck surface.
| Symbol | Meaning |
|---|---|
| run | Horizontal distance between posts. |
| width | Face width of one baluster. |
| gap | Maximum clear space allowed. |
| N | Balusters needed. |
96 inches ÷ (4 + 1.5) = 17.5, so 18 balusters. They leave (96 − 18 × 1.5) ÷ 19 = 3.63 inches of clear gap each.

The IRC requires a 4-inch sphere not to pass anywhere in the guard, which means clear gaps under 4 inches. Many builders use 3½ inches to allow for lumber variation.
Results use standard construction estimating arithmetic: volumes from measured area and depth, unit weights from published material densities, and code-referenced spans or clearances where the page names a code. Quantities are rounded up to whole saleable units and include the stated waste allowance. These tools are planning aids, not structural design, and do not replace a licensed engineer, a local code check, or a contractor's site measurement.
