Concrete Block Calculator
Quickly estimate concrete block quantity, mortar requirements, and material costs for walls and foundations using accurate CMU-based calculations.

Project Configurations
Calculation guide :

1. Wall Length (Feet)
Measure the total horizontal distance of the wall from one end to the other.
2. Wall Height (Feet)
Measure from the ground to the top of the wall.
3. Waste Factor Cushion (%)
Extra blocks added for cutting, breakage, mistakes, and future adjustments. Most projects use 5–10%.
4. Mortar Joint Thickness
The thickness of mortar between blocks. Standard construction uses a 3/8-inch joint.
5. CMU Block Thickness
The width of the concrete block. Common options are 4", 6", 8", 10", and 12".
6. Horizontal Joint Reinforcement
Steel reinforcement placed inside mortar joints to improve wall strength and crack resistance.
7. Core Cavity Fill Strategy
Determines whether hollow block cores are filled with grout or concrete for additional structural support.
Why use this calculator
- Reduce material waste and unnecessary costs
- Improve accuracy in construction planning
- Estimate blocks and mortar together instantly
- Plan budgets and procurement efficiently
How the Concrete Block Calculator Works
Total wall surface area is calculated using a calculator, which is then divided by standard face area of concrete block. Total wall surface area will also have an adjustment factor for mortar joints and waste percentage.
Block Estimation Formula
Wall Area ÷ Block Face Area = Total Blocks Required (plus waste factor)
Standard Material Reference
Standard Concrete Block Sizes (CMU Units)
Common concrete masonry unit (CMU) sizes used in residential and commercial wall construction.
| Material | Size / Use | Estimation |
|---|---|---|
| Standard 8-inch CMU | 8" x 8" x 16" (20x20x40 cm) | 1.125 blocks / sq ft |
| Half Block | 8" x 8" x 8" (20x20x20 cm) | 2.25 blocks / sq ft |
| 6-inch CMU | 6" x 8" x 16" (15x20x40 cm) | 1.125 blocks / sq ft |
| 4-inch Partition Block | 4" x 8" x 16" (10x20x40 cm) | 1.125 blocks / sq ft |
| 10-inch Foundation Block | 10" x 8" x 16" (25x20x40 cm) | 1.125 blocks / sq ft |
| 12-inch Heavy Duty Block | 12" x 8" x 16" (30x20x40 cm) | 1.125 blocks / sq ft |
Mortar & Masonry Mix Requirements
Estimated mortar usage based on standard 3/8-inch joint thickness for CMU wall construction.
| Material | Size / Use | Estimation |
|---|---|---|
| Type S Mortar Mix | 80 lb bag (approx. 10–12 blocks) | High strength load-bearing walls |
| Type N Mortar Mix | 80 lb bag (approx. 12–15 blocks) | General residential walls |
| Coarse Sand Mix | Per mortar batch | Used in masonry mix preparation |
| Core Fill Concrete | Used in hollow CMU cores | Structural reinforcement filling |
