Bricks per square foot depend on the brick and the mortar joint, not just the wall area. A modular brick with a ⅜-inch joint covers about 6.86 bricks per square foot, while a queen closes that to six. This calculator also estimates the mortar volume so you can order bags at the same time.
Brick count and mortar for a wall, with the joint included.
Bricks = Area ÷ ((L + j) × (H + j)) Mortar = wall volume − brick volume
Brick length and height are in inches; the joint j is added to both faces, because each brick shares half a joint on every side. Mortar volume assumes the brick is fully bedded and adds 25% for waste and uneven joints.
| Symbol | Meaning |
|---|---|
| L, H | Brick face length and height. |
| j | Mortar joint thickness. |
| Area | Net wall area. |
The wall is 80 sq ft; modular brick with a ⅜-inch joint gives 6.86 bricks per square foot, so 549 bricks — 577 with 5% waste.

About 6.9 modular, 6.0 queen and 5.6 king with a ⅜-inch joint. Add 5–10% for breakage and cuts.
Results use standard construction estimating arithmetic: volumes from measured area and depth, unit weights from published material densities, and code-referenced spans or clearances where the page names a code. Quantities are rounded up to whole saleable units and include the stated waste allowance. These tools are planning aids, not structural design, and do not replace a licensed engineer, a local code check, or a contractor's site measurement.
