Wall framing is counted in studs and plates: one stud at each layout mark, extra studs at openings and corners, and three plates per wall — two on top, one on the floor. This calculator builds the takeoff from the wall length, spacing and opening count.
Studs, plates and linear feet for a framed wall.
Studs = ⌈wall length ÷ spacing⌉ + 1 + 2 × openings Plates = 3 × wall length
The +1 is the end stud. Each opening adds two studs (one on each side) and does not reduce the layout count. Plates assume a single bottom plate and a double top plate, the common platform-framing detail; a load-bearing wall may need a third top plate.
| Symbol | Meaning |
|---|---|
| L | Wall length in feet. |
| s | Stud spacing in inches (16 or 24). |
| N | Studs required. |
20 ft = 240 in, so 240 ÷ 16 = 15 bays, plus one end stud and two for the opening = 18 studs. Plates total 60 linear feet.

16 inches suits most exterior and load-bearing walls and matches sheet goods. 24 inches is allowed for some non-bearing walls and saves studs.
Results use standard construction estimating arithmetic: volumes from measured area and depth, unit weights from published material densities, and code-referenced spans or clearances where the page names a code. Quantities are rounded up to whole saleable units and include the stated waste allowance. These tools are planning aids, not structural design, and do not replace a licensed engineer, a local code check, or a contractor's site measurement.
