Grout quantity depends on the joint, not just the area: narrow joints and large tiles use very little, while small mosaic tiles with wide joints can triple the coverage figure. This calculator uses the standard joint-volume method and a grout density of 1,600 kg/m³.
Grout weight and bags for a tiled area.
Grout (kg/m²) = (L + W) ÷ (L × W) × j × d × ρ
L and W are tile dimensions in metres, j is joint width and d is joint depth, both in metres; ρ is 1,600 kg/m³. Add 10% for waste and tooling loss. Epoxy grout is sold by volume, so convert using its own density.
| Symbol | Meaning |
|---|---|
| L, W | Tile length and width. |
| j, d | Joint width and depth. |
| ρ | Grout density, about 1,600 kg/m³. |
Each square metre of tile has about 0.02 m² of joint at 8 mm deep, so 20 m² needs about 5.6 kg of grout — one 10 kg bag.

About 0.3–0.5 kg/m² for large tiles with narrow joints, and 1–2 kg/m² for mosaic with wide joints.
Results use standard construction estimating arithmetic: volumes from measured area and depth, unit weights from published material densities, and code-referenced spans or clearances where the page names a code. Quantities are rounded up to whole saleable units and include the stated waste allowance. These tools are planning aids, not structural design, and do not replace a licensed engineer, a local code check, or a contractor's site measurement.
