Material removal rate tells you how fast a cut is producing chips, which drives cycle time, tool wear and power demand. For turning it is speed × feed × depth; for milling, width × depth × feed rate. A 10 horsepower machine removes roughly 3–4 cubic inches of steel per minute per horsepower at the spindle.
Cubic inches per minute removed in turning, milling or drilling.
Turning: MRR = 12 × SFM × feed × depth Milling: MRR = width × depth × feed rate
SFM is surface feet per minute, feed is inches per revolution (turning) or inches per minute (milling). For steel, expect about 1–1.5 in³/min per horsepower at the cut; aluminium allows 3–4.
| Symbol | Meaning |
|---|---|
| MRR | Material removal rate. |
| SFM | Cutting speed in surface feet per minute. |
| f | Feed rate. |
MRR = 12 × 300 × 0.01 × 0.1 = 3.6 in³/min, needing roughly 3 horsepower at the cut.

As high as the machine, tool and finish allow. Roughing aims for maximum removal; finishing trades rate for surface finish.
Results use standard construction estimating arithmetic: volumes from measured area and depth, unit weights from published material densities, and code-referenced spans or clearances where the page names a code. Quantities are rounded up to whole saleable units and include the stated waste allowance. These tools are planning aids, not structural design, and do not replace a licensed engineer, a local code check, or a contractor's site measurement.
