Is a round pen good for horses?

Round pens are sold as straight panels bolted into a polygon, so the finished pen is slightly smaller than its nominal diameter. Twelve 12-foot panels make a pen about 44 feet across — the classic 50-foot round pen is usually 14 panels.

Formula

circumference ≈ n × panel length diameter = circumference ÷ π

The polygon's true diameter is measured across the flats and is slightly less than the circumference ÷ π. This estimate is within about 1% for pens of 10 panels or more.
