How This Net Worth Calculator Works
This calculator lets you add custom asset and liability categories, enter their values, and instantly compute your net worth. Unlike fixed-category calculators like NerdWallet's or Bankrate's, you can add as many items as you need — multiple investment accounts, several properties, or any other asset or debt.
The results show your total net worth, a debt-to-asset ratio, a visual asset composition bar, and a per-category breakdown. Add or remove categories to match your actual financial picture.
All calculations run entirely in your browser. No data is stored, transmitted, or tracked. Your financial information stays completely private — unlike apps like Empower or Monarch Money that require account linking.
What Is Net Worth?
Net worth is the difference between what you own and what you owe. It is the single most important number in personal finance — a snapshot of your total financial position at any given moment. As Investopedia explains, net worth is "the value of all assets, minus the total of all debts."
According to the Federal Reserve's 2022 Survey of Consumer Finances, the median American household net worth is approximately $192,900, while the mean is about $1,063,700. The large gap between median and mean reflects wealth concentration at the top — a few very wealthy households pull the average far above the midpoint.
As NerdWallet's analysis explains, tracking your net worth over time is more important than the number itself. If your net worth is growing each year, you're building wealth — regardless of where you start.
Assets vs Liabilities: What to Include
Assets (What You Own)
- Cash and checking accounts
- Savings accounts and CDs
- Investment accounts (stocks, bonds, mutual funds, ETFs)
- Retirement accounts (401k, IRA, Roth IRA)
- Home equity (market value minus mortgage)
- Vehicle value (use Kelley Blue Book)
- Business ownership equity
- Other valuable property
Liabilities (What You Owe)
- Mortgage balance
- Auto loan balance
- Credit card balances
- Student loan balance
- Personal loans
- Medical debt
- Tax obligations
- Any other outstanding obligations
Important: Use current market values for assets, not what you paid. A home purchased for $200K that's now worth $350K should be listed at $350K. For debts, use the current outstanding balance. The CFPB recommends updating values at least annually.
Liquid Net Worth vs Total Net Worth
Not all assets are equally accessible. Liquid net worth is your net worth excluding illiquid assets like real estate, vehicles, and retirement accounts with withdrawal penalties. As NerdWallet explains, liquid net worth "represents the wealth you could access quickly — cash, savings, and taxable investments."
Financial planners distinguish between the two because they serve different purposes. Your total net worth shows overall wealth accumulation, while liquid net worth shows your financial flexibility — how much you could access in an emergency or to seize an investment opportunity.
The Net Worth Formula
Net Worth = Total Assets − Total Liabilities
Debt-to-Asset Ratio = Total Liabilities ÷ Total Assets × 100%
Liquid Net Worth = Cash + Savings + Taxable Investments − All Liabilities
A lower debt-to-asset ratio indicates stronger financial health. Below 30% is generally considered healthy; above 50% suggests high leverage.
Net Worth by Age & Percentile: Where Do You Rank?
The Federal Reserve's Survey of Consumer Finances provides the most reliable data on American household wealth. DQYDJ and Fidelity analyze this data to show where individual households fall.
| Age Group | 25th %ile | Median (50th) | 75th %ile | 90th %ile | Mean |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Under 35 | $3,500 | $39,400 | $139,700 | $408,100 | $141,200 |
| 35-44 | $21,100 | $135,300 | $436,200 | $1,205,400 | $549,600 |
| 45-54 | $37,500 | $247,200 | $673,100 | $1,891,700 | $975,800 |
| 55-64 | $40,400 | $364,500 | $907,200 | $2,511,000 | $1,165,400 |
| 65-74 | $42,600 | $409,900 | $975,200 | $2,600,000 | $1,217,300 |
| 75+ | $35,800 | $335,600 | $821,400 | $2,200,000 | $977,600 |

How to read this table: If you're 40 years old with a net worth of $250K, you're slightly above the median ($135K) for your age group but below the 75th percentile ($436K). Your net worth puts you roughly at the 55th-60th percentile. For more precise percentile calculations, see DQYDJ's Net Worth by Age Calculator.
Wealth Tiers: Understanding Net Worth Classifications
The financial industry classifies households into wealth tiers based on net worth. As NerdWallet's guide to high net worth explains, these classifications determine access to wealth management services, tax planning, and estate planning.
| Tier | Net Worth Range | % of U.S. Households | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
| Negative | Below $0 | ~15% | Debts exceed assets — common for students and new homeowners |
| Building | $0 – $100K | ~30% | Early wealth building — establishing savings and reducing debt |
| Middle Class | $100K – $500K | ~25% | Significant home equity and retirement savings accumulation |
| Affluent | $500K – $1M | ~12% | Strong savings, investments, and possibly multiple properties |
| High Net Worth | $1M – $5M | ~12% | HNWI — qualifies for wealth management services |
| Very High Net Worth | $5M – $30M | ~1.5% | VHNWI — access to private banking and alternative investments |
| Ultra High Net Worth | $30M+ | ~0.2% | UHNW — dedicated family office and estate planning |

How Net Worth Relates to Retirement
Your net worth at retirement directly determines your financial security. Financial planners use several benchmarks to assess retirement readiness:
Fidelity Rule: 10x final salary by age 67
Fidelity Investments recommends saving 10 times your final salary by age 67. On a $75K salary, that means a $750K net worth target at retirement.
FIRE Rule: 25x annual expenses
The FIRE movement uses the 4% rule from the Trinity Study: save 25x your annual expenses. On $50K annual spending, your target is $1.25M. Use the FIRE Calculator to model your timeline.
Social Security replacement rate
Social Security replaces roughly 40% of pre-retirement income for average earners. Your net worth needs to supplement this gap — the higher your lifestyle costs, the more you need saved.
How to Grow Your Net Worth
Increase income faster than expenses
The gap between what you earn and what you spend is the engine of net worth growth. Even small increases in savings rate compound dramatically over decades. A 20% savings rate vs 10% can mean retiring 10+ years earlier.
Invest consistently, not speculatively
Regular contributions to diversified index funds historically outperform stock picking. As SEC Investor.gov explains, time in the market matters more than timing the market. See ROI Calculator for return comparisons.
Pay off high-interest debt aggressively
Credit card debt at 18-25% APR destroys wealth. Pay it off before investing beyond employer match. Use the Debt Payoff Calculator to model snowball vs avalanche strategies.
Maximize employer retirement match
If your employer matches 401(k) contributions, that's an instant 50-100% return. As the Department of Labor notes, this is the most reliable wealth-building tool available to most workers.
Track your net worth regularly
What gets measured gets managed. Calculate your net worth quarterly or monthly to see the impact of your financial decisions. This calculator makes it easy — no account required.
Common Net Worth Mistakes to Avoid
Overvaluing your home
Using Zillow's "Zestimate" as gospel can inflate your net worth. Use a conservative estimate — Zillow estimates can be off by 5-10%. Consider using the lower end of the estimate range.
Ignoring your 401(k) match
Not contributing enough to get the full employer match is leaving free money on the table. This directly reduces your net worth growth rate.
Chasing net worth without building income
You can't save your way to wealth on a low income. Focus on increasing earning potential alongside saving. Career growth, side income, and skill development compound alongside investments.
Comparing yourself to wrong benchmarks
Social media skews perceived norms. The median net worth for Americans under 35 is only $39K. Don't compare yourself to Instagram influencers — compare to actual data from the Federal Reserve.
Ignoring inflation
$100K today won't have the same purchasing power in 20 years. At 3% inflation, it's worth about $55K in today's dollars. Invest to outpace inflation — cash loses value over time. Use the Inflation Calculator to understand the impact.
