This calculator turns a daily calorie target into grams of fat for a standard, low-fat or high-fat eating pattern. Fat provides about nine calories per gram, so the gram amount is smaller than the equivalent carbohydrate figure. It also reports a saturated fat ceiling of under ten percent of calories.
Daily fat grams with a saturated fat ceiling.
Fat (g) = calories × fat share ÷ 9 Saturated fat limit (g) = calories × 0.10 ÷ 9
Fat supplies about 9 kcal per gram. The presets are 30% of calories for a standard diet, 20% for low-fat and 40% for high-fat. The saturated fat ceiling uses the common guidance to keep saturated fat below 10% of total calories.
| Symbol | Meaning |
|---|---|
| calories | Daily energy target in kilocalories. |
| fat share | Percentage of calories assigned to fat. |
| fat | Daily total fat target in grams. |
| saturated fat | Upper guide for saturated fat in grams. |
A standard diet assigns 30% of calories to fat. 2000 × 0.30 = 600 kcal, and 600 ÷ 9 = 66.7 g of fat per day. The saturated fat ceiling is 2000 × 0.10 ÷ 9 = 22.2 g, so most of the fat in the diet should come from unsaturated sources.
Fat is the most energy-dense macronutrient, so small changes in gram intake move calories quickly. That makes the nine-calorie conversion useful for planning, but it also means the quality of those grams deserves attention. Unsaturated fats from olive oil, nuts, seeds and oily fish are commonly favoured over saturated fats from processed meat, butter and some baked goods. The saturated fat ceiling is a population guide rather than a personal limit, and it should not be read as a reason to avoid all fat. Some fatty acids are essential, and fat helps absorb vitamins A, D, E and K. If you have a history of gallstones, pancreatitis or a lipid disorder, ask a clinician before making a large change to fat intake.

There is no universal gram target. A standard mixed diet often places fat near 30% of calories, with low-fat patterns near 20% and high-fat patterns near 40%. The right share depends on preference, culture, medical history and total energy needs.
Energy and nutrient estimates are population guidance, not personal prescriptions. Actual needs vary with body composition, medical conditions, medication, pregnancy and activity. Values are rounded and should be discussed with a registered dietitian or clinician when used to plan treatment.
