The fertile window is the short stretch of days when intercourse can lead to conception. It is usually described as the five days before ovulation plus the day of ovulation, because sperm survive for several days while the egg remains viable for about a day. This calculator estimates ovulation from the LMP and cycle length, then shows that core window plus the following day as a practical margin.
Likely ovulation and the surrounding fertile days.

Ovulation ≈ LMP + cycle − 14 Fertile window = ovulation − 5 days to ovulation + 1 day
The calculation assumes a 14-day luteal phase, which is an average rather than a fixed rule. Cycle length varies, and stress, illness and travel can shift ovulation. The window is an estimate for planning, not a contraceptive method; do not rely on it to avoid pregnancy.
| Symbol | Meaning |
|---|---|
| LMP | First day of the last menstrual period. |
| Cycle | Typical cycle length in days. |
| Ovulation | Estimated release date, about 14 days before the next period. |
Ovulation ≈ 1 January + 28 − 14 = 15 January 2026. The fertile window runs from 10 January (five days before) to 16 January (one day after). With a 35-day cycle, ovulation moves to 22 January and the window becomes 17–23 January.
Sperm can remain viable in the reproductive tract for up to about five days, while the egg is fertilisable for roughly 12 to 24 hours after release. That asymmetry is why the days before ovulation matter more than the days after. The probability of conception rises through the window and peaks just before ovulation. Calendar estimates place the window using an average luteal phase, but individual cycles vary. If timing matters, combining the calendar with ovulation predictor kits or cervical mucus observations gives a better picture than any single method. For people with very irregular cycles or known fertility concerns, a clinician can offer more targeted assessment rather than repeated date calculations.

It is usually described as six days: the five days before ovulation and ovulation day itself. Some sources add the day after ovulation, and this calculator includes it as a practical margin, even though the chance of conception falls sharply once the egg is no longer viable.
Pregnancy dating and fertility estimates assume regular cycles and typical ovulation. They cannot confirm pregnancy, viability or gestational age, and they do not replace ultrasound or prenatal care. Seek urgent care for pain, bleeding or reduced fetal movement.
