Compare two values with no before/after relationship — product prices, measurements, estimates. The symmetric formula divides by the average, so swapping the inputs never changes the answer (unlike percentage change).
Symmetric difference using the average as the base.
Difference % = |a − b| / ((|a| + |b|) / 2) × 100
| Symbol | Meaning |
|---|---|
| a | First value |
| b | Second value |
Comparing 50 and 60: |60−50| / 55 × 100 ≈ 18.18% — identical if you swap the inputs.
