Field of view is the angle a camera sees across the sensor. A longer lens narrows it for a tighter framing, while a larger sensor widens it at the same focal length.
Angle covered by a lens and sensor.
FOV = 2 arctan(d / (2f))
d is the sensor dimension and f the focal length. The result is the full angle across that dimension, not the half-angle.
| Symbol | Meaning |
|---|---|
| FOV | Full field-of-view angle. |
| d | Sensor dimension in the chosen direction. |
| f | Lens focal length. |
FOV = 2 arctan(36 / 100) = 39.6°. A 24 mm lens on the same sensor widens it to 73.7°.

Usually, for landscape photography. Portrait shooters often quote the vertical angle, and drone specs often quote the diagonal.
Results are computed from the standard equations of classical mechanics. Unit conversions use the SI definitions published by NIST. Air resistance is ignored unless the calculator names a drag model.
