One minute of angle is one sixtieth of a degree. At 100 yards it subtends about 1.047 inches, which is why shooters use MOA as a convenient adjustment unit. This calculator converts between angle, distance and linear spread.
Convert minute-of-angle adjustments into spread at a distance.
spread = d · tan(MOA / 60°) MOA = 60 · atan(spread / d)
The small-angle approximation spread ≈ d × MOA / 3437.75 is close enough for typical ranges, but the tangent form is used here for accuracy.
| Symbol | Meaning |
|---|---|
| d | Distance to the target, in metres. |
| MOA | Angle in minutes of arc. |
| spread | Linear spread at the target, in metres. |
One MOA at 100 m spans 0.0291 m, or 2.91 cm. At 100 yards the same angle spans 1.047 inches.

Almost. It is 1.047 inches, which is why long-range shooters use the exact value rather than rounding.
Results are computed from the standard equations of classical mechanics. Unit conversions use the SI definitions published by NIST. Air resistance is ignored unless the calculator names a drag model.
