Wainscoting is a panel layout problem as much as a material one: you want equal panel widths with no sliver at either end. This calculator works from the wall length, wainscot height and target panel width, and returns the panel count with the actual width each panel will be.
Panels, rails and stiles for a wainscot wall.
Area = L × W Units = ⌈Area × (1 + waste) ÷ coverage⌉ Cost = Units × price
One panel covers 7.5 sq ft per 30 × 36 inch panel. Units are rounded up because suppliers sell whole panels, and the waste allowance covers cuts, mistakes and future repairs.
| Symbol | Meaning |
|---|---|
| L, W | Room length and width (or wall length and height). |
| A | Area to cover, in square feet. |
| w | Waste allowance as a percentage. |
| N | Number of panels to buy, rounded up. |
The wall is 36 sq ft; with 15% waste that is 41.4 sq ft, so six 30 × 36 inch panels at 7.5 sq ft each.

One third of the wall height is the classic proportion: 32–36 inches in a room with 8 ft ceilings.
Results use standard construction estimating arithmetic: volumes from measured area and depth, unit weights from published material densities, and code-referenced spans or clearances where the page names a code. Quantities are rounded up to whole saleable units and include the stated waste allowance. These tools are planning aids, not structural design, and do not replace a licensed engineer, a local code check, or a contractor's site measurement.
