Body mass index for men uses the same height-to-weight ratio as the general BMI formula, but the interpretation deserves male-specific context. Men tend to carry more visceral fat at the same BMI and are more likely to have a muscular build that pushes BMI into the overweight band without excess fat. This calculator returns your BMI, category and the weight range linked to a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9.
Body mass index with male waist and muscle context.
BMI = weight(kg) ÷ height(m)² Healthy weight = 18.5–24.9 × height(m)²
The WHO adult cutoffs are underweight below 18.5, healthy 18.5–24.9, overweight 25–29.9 and obesity 30 or above. These bands do not adjust for age or ethnicity, and they do not distinguish fat from muscle.

| BMI | Body mass index in kg/m². |
| height | Standing height in metres. |
| weight | Body weight in kilograms. |
BMI = 80 ÷ 1.75² = 26.1, which is in the overweight band. The healthy range at this height is 56.7 to 76.3 kg, so 80 kg is about 3.7 kg above the upper bound. A waist of 90 cm or more would add central-fat context that BMI alone cannot provide.
BMI treats the body as a single mass distributed over a squared height. It cannot tell whether that mass sits in the liver and abdominal cavity or under the skin of the hips and thighs. In men, visceral fat accumulates earlier and is more strongly associated with insulin resistance, high triglycerides and cardiovascular events. Two men with a BMI of 27 can therefore have very different risk profiles. A waist tape is cheap, repeatable and sensitive to the fat that matters most. Measure at the level of the navel or the narrowest point, keep the tape horizontal, and track the number over months. If BMI and waist disagree, trust the combination rather than either number alone, and ask a clinician to interpret the pattern in the context of blood pressure, lipids and glucose.

The arithmetic is identical and the WHO adult cutoffs are the same. Body composition differs on average, so the same BMI can correspond to different fat percentages, which is why waist measurement and body-fat estimates are useful alongside it.
BMI is a screening ratio, not a diagnosis. The adult WHO cutoffs do not account for muscle mass, fat distribution, ethnicity or age. Pregnant people and children need different references. Interpret the result alongside waist circumference, medical history and other measurements.
