Body mass index for women uses the standard weight-to-height formula and the same WHO adult bands as men. Interpretation differs because women generally carry a higher percentage of body fat at the same BMI, and because pregnancy makes BMI temporarily unsuitable as a weight-status measure. This calculator returns BMI, its category and the healthy weight range for your height.
Body mass index with female waist and pregnancy context.
BMI = weight(kg) ÷ height(m)² Healthy weight = 18.5–24.9 × height(m)²
WHO adult cutoffs apply to non-pregnant women. Body fat percentage is typically higher in women than men at the same BMI, so a BMI in the healthy band does not guarantee a healthy body composition. Waist circumference thresholds for women are commonly 80 cm for increased risk and 88 cm for substantially increased risk.
| Symbol | Meaning |
|---|---|
| BMI | Body mass index in kg/m². |
| height | Standing height in metres. |
| weight | Body weight in kilograms. |
BMI = 70 ÷ 1.65² = 25.7, which is in the overweight band. The healthy range at 165 cm is 50.4 to 67.8 kg, so 70 kg is about 2.2 kg above the upper bound. A waist of 80 cm or more would add central-fat context that BMI alone cannot provide.
A BMI result is a single ratio, and small changes in height or weight move it more than most people expect. At 165 cm, one kilogram changes BMI by about 0.37, so a weigh-in after a salty meal can cross a category boundary. That is why clinicians rarely act on one reading. Look at the trend over several weeks, the waist measurement, energy and fitness, and any relevant blood markers. The healthy range is also a population band, not a guarantee: a woman with a BMI of 24 can still carry excess visceral fat, while a muscular woman at 26 may have low fat mass. If your goal is health rather than a number, prioritise sleep, protein intake, strength work and gradual changes you can sustain. If you have symptoms such as fatigue, irregular periods or unexplained weight change, discuss them with a clinician rather than adjusting your BMI target.

It is a reasonable population screening tool but a crude individual measure. It misses fat distribution and body composition, and the healthy range is broad. Use it alongside waist circumference and, if needed, a body-fat estimate.
BMI is a screening ratio, not a diagnosis. The adult WHO cutoffs do not account for muscle mass, fat distribution, ethnicity or age. Pregnant people and children need different references. Interpret the result alongside waist circumference, medical history and other measurements.
