Poisson's ratio describes the Poisson effect: the tendency of a material in tension to expand laterally. The ratio of transverse strain to axial strain is often constant for a given material within its elastic range.
Negative ratio of transverse to axial strain.
ν = – ε_trans / ε_axial
ε_trans is the strain perpendicular to the applied load and ε_axial is the strain in the load direction. By convention ν is positive for most materials.
| Symbol | Meaning |
|---|---|
| ν | Poisson's ratio. |
| ε_axial | Axial strain. |
| ε_trans | Transverse strain. |
With ν = 0.3, ε_trans = –0.3 × 0.001 = –0.0003 (‑0.03 %).

Yes. Auxetic materials expand laterally when stretched; their ν is negative.
Results are computed from the standard equations of classical mechanics. Unit conversions use the SI definitions published by NIST. Air resistance is ignored unless the calculator names a drag model.
