Young's modulus (or elastic modulus) measures the stiffness of a linear‑elastic material. It is the ratio of uniaxial stress to uniaxial strain in the range where Hooke's law applies.
Elastic modulus in tension/compression.
E = σ / ε
E is the slope of the linear portion of the stress‑strain curve. σ is the engineering stress and ε the engineering strain.
| Symbol | Meaning |
|---|---|
| E | Young's modulus. |
| σ | Engineering stress. |
| ε | Engineering strain. |
E = 200 MPa / 0.001 = 200 GPa, a typical value for structural steel.

No. It varies widely; polymers are an order of magnitude lower, ceramics higher, and diamond the highest.
Results are computed from the standard equations of classical mechanics. Unit conversions use the SI definitions published by NIST. Air resistance is ignored unless the calculator names a drag model.
