Find the pace a target 10K finish time requires. A 10K sits between a fast 5K and a longer race, so pacing is a balance of holding a solid speed without fading, and knowing the pace per kilometre and per mile makes that plan concrete.
Find the pace needed for a target 10K finish time.
pace (per km) = 10K time ÷ 10 pace (per mile) = pace (per km) × 1.609344 speed (km/h) = 10 ÷ time (hours)
The pace is an even average across all ten kilometres. Most runners aim for a controlled first half and try to lift slightly over the last few kilometres rather than starting fast.
| Symbol | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 10K time | Your target finish time over ten kilometres. |
| pace | Average time per kilometre or per mile at that finish time. |
| speed | Average speed in kilometres or miles per hour. |
A 50:00 10K is an average pace of 5:00 per km, which is about 8:03 per mile, and an average speed of 12 km/h. That is the same pace as a 25 minute 5K held for twice the distance.
The ten kilometre distance is fixed, so the calculator divides your finish time by ten to give pace per kilometre, then converts to per mile. This average is the speed you must hold to reach the finish in your entered time, with no allowance for hills, wind, or slowing.
The 10k is a benchmark distance for many runners. It is long enough to demand real endurance and short enough to be run near threshold, so 10k pace is often used as the reference for tempo training, typically a little slower than 5k pace.
Because the 10k takes most runners between thirty-five and sixty minutes, it rewards a steady start. The first kilometre should feel controlled rather than fast, since going out too hard usually means giving the time back in the last two kilometres. The pace you entered is an average; the skill is keeping each kilometre near it.
Environmental factors move the number. A hilly course, a windy day, or a hot afternoon can all add time that the arithmetic does not know about. Use the pace as a plan, then adjust in real time based on how the effort feels.

Usually not for the whole distance. Most runners are a little slower per kilometre over 10K than over 5K, because the effort has to be sustainable for twice as long.
