Estimate the calories you burn jumping rope from your weight and the minutes you train. Skipping rope is a high intensity activity, so even short sessions add up quickly.
Estimate jump rope calories from weight and minutes.
kcal = MET × weight (kg) × time (hours) moderate 11.0 · vigorous 12.3 MET
The MET values are high because skipping rope keeps the whole body moving at a fast cadence. Longer continuous sets burn more than the same minutes broken by long rests.
| Symbol | Meaning |
|---|---|
| intensity | How hard you worked, which sets the MET value. |
| weight | Your body mass in kilograms. |
| minutes | How long you jumped, in minutes. |
A 70 kg person jumping at a moderate pace for 20 minutes burns 11 × 70 × 0.333 ≈ 257 kcal. Ten extra minutes at the same pace adds about 128 kcal.
Jump rope is one of the more energy dense activities, carrying MET values that climb from roughly 8 to 12 as the pace and complexity increase. That places it near the intensity of running a fast mile, which is why short sessions still add up to a meaningful burn.
The MET method applies here as elsewhere, with kilocalories per minute equal to MET times 3.5 times weight in kilograms divided by 200. At a brisk pace, a seventy kilogram person can spend well over ten kilocalories per minute, so a fifteen minute set is a real workout.
The MET value assumes you keep the rope moving at a steady cadence with minimal trip ups. Beginners spend a large share of each minute recovering from missed jumps, which lowers the average intensity and the true calorie cost below the headline figure.
Because the activity is high impact and hard to sustain, most people use it in intervals. Enter the total minutes actually spent with the rope turning, not the wall clock minutes including rest, so the estimate reflects real work rather than standing still.

If you are breathing hard and can only speak a few words at a time, call it vigorous. An easy, slow cadence you can chat through is moderate.
