Estimate the calories you burn on an elliptical trainer from your weight and the minutes you spend on it. The machine is low impact, but the resistance and your effort level still change the energy cost.
Estimate elliptical calories from weight and minutes.
kcal = MET × weight (kg) × time (hours) moderate 5.0 · vigorous 7.0 MET
The MET values are for a general elliptical session. Using the moving handles, adding resistance, or raising the incline pushes the effort toward the vigorous figure.
| Symbol | Meaning |
|---|---|
| effort | How hard the session felt, which sets the MET value. |
| weight | Your body mass in kilograms. |
| minutes | How long you trained, in minutes. |
A 70 kg person on the elliptical for 30 minutes at vigorous effort burns 7 × 70 × 0.5 = 245 kcal. At a relaxed moderate pace the same half hour burns about 175 kcal.
Elliptical training typically lands near 5 METs at a moderate effort, a value that reflects the combined work of pushing and pulling the handles while driving the pedals. The calculator turns that into kilocalories per minute using the MET equation, then multiplies by your session length.
The machine display often uses a proprietary formula tied to its resistance and speed settings, and these readouts commonly run high compared with measured energy expenditure, so treat the console figure as an upper bound rather than a target.
A single MET value cannot capture the full range from a gentle glide to a steep, heavy climb. Increasing resistance, lengthening the stride, and using the arm handles all raise the real cost toward the values seen in running, while coasting at low resistance reduces it.
Because elliptical motion is low impact, people often sustain it longer than running, so even a moderate per minute rate can produce a large session total. Enter the minutes you kept moving for the most realistic estimate.

It is easier on the joints but generally burns a little less for the same time, because there is no impact to absorb and the effort can be lower.
