Work out your bench press training weights from either a recent set or a one rep max you already know. The calculator can estimate your max from a set of reps, or take a known max and break it down into working loads from a heavy single down to a lighter speed set. It also flags the loads that need a spotter.
Estimate your bench press max and list working weights.
from a set: 1RM = weight × (1 + reps ÷ 30) working weight = 1RM × percent ÷ 100
A spotter and safety pins or safeties are essential for heavy bench attempts, because a failed rep can pin the bar on the chest. Match the pause style you used in the set, since a paused rep is harder than a touch and go rep.
| Symbol | Meaning |
|---|---|
| weight | The load of the recent set, in kilograms. |
| reps | How many reps the set contained, 1 to 20. |
| one rep max | Your single rep best, used directly in the from a max mode. |
A set of 80 kg for 8 reps gives an Epley estimate of 80 × (1 + 8 ÷ 30) = 101.3 kg. From there, 85 percent is about 86.1 kg, 80 percent is about 81.1 kg, and 70 percent is roughly 70.9 kg for higher rep sets.
The bench press max estimate uses the same rep max mathematics as any lift, so Epley and Brzycki apply to a set of bench reps exactly as they do to a squat or a deadlift.
The bench is more sensitive to technique than most lifts. A paused rep with the bar touched to the chest and no bounce is harder than a touch and go rep, so a set performed with a rebound overstates the true competition style max. Grip width, arch, and leg drive also change how much load a given number of reps represents.
The estimate anchors your training percentages, but it is a moving target. A well rested day, a spotter, and a solid setup can add a few percent, while a fatigued or unfamiliar session can subtract as much.
Because the bench involves a large stabilizing demand, the floor of the press and any safety pins should be set from a tested or a conservatively estimated max, not the most optimistic figure a formula produces.

It can. A wider grip shortens the range of motion but shifts demand to the chest, while a closer grip shifts it to the triceps. Keep your grip consistent from the set you test to the sets you train.
