Convert between the pace, speed, time, and distance of a run. Enter any two of these values and the calculator works out the rest, in kilometres or miles, so you can turn a finish time into a pace or a pace into a finish time.
Convert between running pace, speed, time, and distance.
pace = time ÷ distance speed = distance ÷ time distance = time × speed
Pace is the time per unit of distance, so a lower number is faster. Speed is distance per hour and is the inverse of pace, so the two always move in opposite directions.
| Symbol | Meaning |
|---|---|
| time | Total run time, from which pace and speed are derived. |
| distance | Total run distance in kilometres or miles. |
| pace | Time per kilometre or per mile, shown as minutes and seconds. |
Running 10 km in 50 minutes is a pace of 5:00 per km, which is about 8:03 per mile and an average speed of 12 km/h. The same time over 6.2 miles gives the matching pace per mile directly.
Pace is simply the time you take divided by the distance you cover, so a forty minute eight kilometre run is five minutes per kilometre. The calculator converts your inputs into one consistent unit set, then divides, which is why entering a distance and a time is enough to produce a pace without any estimation or modelling.
The same relationship runs in reverse. Multiply a pace by a distance to get a finish time, and divide a distance by a time to get a speed. These three quantities, time, distance, and pace, are locked together, so if you know two of them the third follows exactly with no assumptions.
Pace and speed describe the same motion in opposite directions. Pace is minutes per kilometre or per mile, so a lower number is faster, while speed is distance per hour, so a higher number is faster. Converting between them means dividing sixty by the other, and mixing kilometres with miles is the most common source of error in pacing work.
Because the arithmetic is exact, the only real uncertainty comes from the inputs. A measured course and an honest clock give a true pace, while a treadmill belt or a GPS watch adds its own small errors, especially for calibration and for routes with sharp turns.

Multiply the pace per kilometre by 1.609344, because a mile is that many kilometres. A 5:00 per km pace becomes about 8:03 per mile.
