WHIP counts walks and hits allowed, then divides by innings pitched. It shows how many baserunners a pitcher puts on per inning, so lower is better.
Track walks and hits allowed per inning pitched.
outs = full innings × 3 + outs digit innings = outs ÷ 3 WHIP = (BB + H) ÷ innings
WHIP ignores hit-by-pitch and errors, so it is not a complete measure of baserunners. Like ERA, it needs baseball innings notation, where 150.1 means 150 and one-third innings.
| Symbol | Meaning |
|---|---|
| BB | Walks allowed, counted as a baserunner. |
| H | Hits allowed, counted as a baserunner. |
| IP | Innings pitched in baseball notation, where the digit after the decimal counts outs. |
| WHIP | Walks plus hits divided by innings pitched, shown to three decimals. |
40 walks plus 120 hits is 160 baserunners. 150.1 innings is 150 plus one out, or 451 outs and 150.333 innings, so WHIP = 160 ÷ 150.333 = 1.064.
WHIP stands for walks plus hits per inning pitched. The numerator is walks allowed plus hits allowed, and the denominator is innings pitched, again in baseball notation where 6.1 means six and one third. It estimates how many baserunners a pitcher allows per inning of work.
The stat is a clean measure of baserunner traffic, but it counts a walk and a single equally and ignores everything that happens after a runner reaches. It does not see catcher interference or errors that put runners on, and it gives no credit for a pitcher who strands those runners.
Two pitchers with the same WHIP can allow very different numbers of runs if one gives up hits with runners in scoring position and the other does not. WHIP also treats a single and a double the same, even though a double often scores a runner from first. It is a useful companion to ERA, not a replacement.

No. The standard formula counts walks and hits only. A hit-by-pitch is a baserunner in reality, so WHIP slightly understates total traffic.
