How to Budget Any Trip
Break the trip into five buckets: flights (per person), lodging (per night), food (per day per person), local transport (per day), and activities (per person), then add card or foreign-transaction fees on top. Per-person-per-day is the benchmark number: compare it against destination norms ($60 to 120 SE Asia, $150 to 300 Western Europe, $150 to 250 US mid-range) to know instantly if the plan fits.
Total = Flights + Lodging×Nights + Food×Days×People + Transport×Days + Activities + Fees
Per person/day = Total ÷ Travelers ÷ Days · Add 10 to 15% buffer for surprises
Worked Example
Scenario: 2 travelers, 7 days, $450 flights, $150/night lodging, $70 food/day/person, $40 transport/day, $200 activities/person, 2% fee
Total Trip
~$4,400
Per Person / Day
~$314
Biggest Bucket
Lodging ~$1,050
Card Fees
~$86 (use a no-fee card)
A no-foreign-fee travel card wipes the fee line to zero, the easiest $86 saved on this trip. Subtract points value from flight/lodging inputs to price award travel.
