Common Tipping Mistakes

• Tipping on the post-tax amount when you mean pre-tax: On a $100 bill with 10% tax, tipping 20% on the post-tax ($110) gives $22 instead of $20. Over time, this adds up. Use the pre-tax toggle if you want to follow standard etiquette.
• Forgetting to tip on the pre-discount amount: If a coupon or discount reduces your bill, tip on the full original amount — the server did the same work.
• Splitting uneven orders evenly: If one person ordered a $5 salad and another a $40 steak, splitting the total equally is unfair. Ask for separate checks or calculate individual tips.
• Tipping less than 15% for adequate service: In the US, 15% is the baseline for acceptable service. Below this signals dissatisfaction. If service was genuinely poor, speak with a manager first.
• Not tipping delivery drivers: Food delivery drivers use their own gas and vehicle. 10–15% with a $3 minimum is courteous, especially in bad weather.
