Find the pace a target 5K finish time requires. Because 5K is a short race, small changes in pace make a large difference, so knowing the pace per kilometre and per mile helps you set a realistic goal and pace it correctly.
Find the pace needed for a target 5K finish time.
pace (per km) = 5K time ÷ 5 pace (per mile) = pace (per km) × 1.609344 speed (km/h) = 5 ÷ time (hours)
A 5K is often run at close to an even pace, but many runners start slightly faster on a flat course. The result here is the average needed to hit exactly that finish time.
| Symbol | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 5K time | Your target finish time over five kilometres. |
| pace | Average time per kilometre or per mile at that finish time. |
| speed | Average speed in kilometres or miles per hour. |
A 25:00 5K is an average pace of 5:00 per km, which is about 8:03 per mile, and an average speed of 12 km/h. Shaving one minute off the finish time takes about 12 seconds per km off the pace.
The five kilometre distance is fixed at 5.0 kilometres, or 3.1 miles, so pace comes directly from dividing your finish time by five. Because the race is short, the resulting pace sits close to your maximal sustainable effort, the speed you could hope to hold for roughly twenty to thirty minutes of hard running.
This makes the 5k a strong fitness marker. A faster 5k pace generally reflects a higher aerobic capacity, and the same number feeds the Riegel prediction used to estimate times at longer distances.
A 5k is short enough that a small early error matters. The temptation to sprint the first kilometre is strong, and the cost reappears in the final kilometre as a fade. Starting at target pace, holding it, then kicking only in the last few hundred metres usually produces the best time your fitness allows.
Warm up before the start, because the race is too short to treat the first kilometre as a warm up. The pacing arithmetic assumes you ran the whole distance at a steady effort, so any time spent easing into the race is time you cannot get back.

It depends on your training and experience. A useful benchmark is a pace you can hold evenly without slowing badly over the final kilometre.
