Training zones split your heart rate range into bands that target different adaptations. This calculator estimates your maximum heart rate from age and turns the standard percentage bands into beats per minute ranges for each of the five zones.
Turn an age based maximum heart rate into five training zones.
max HR = 220 − age Z1 50–60% · Z2 60–70% · Z3 70–80% · Z4 80–90% · Z5 90–100%
Zones are shares of an estimated maximum, so a true maximum that differs by ten beats shifts every boundary. The bands also overlap at their edges by design, since effort does not change in a step.
| Symbol | Meaning |
|---|---|
| age | Your age in years, used to estimate maximum heart rate. |
| zones | The five percentage bands of maximum heart rate. |
At age 40 the estimated maximum is about 180 bpm. Zone 1 runs about 90 to 108, zone 2 about 108 to 126, zone 3 about 126 to 144, zone 4 about 144 to 162, and zone 5 about 162 to 180 bpm.
Heart rate zones divide the range between rest and maximum into bands, most often five of them. A common layout places zone one at 50 to 60 percent of maximum for recovery, zone two at 60 to 70 for easy aerobic work, zone three at 70 to 80 for steady tempo, zone four at 80 to 90 for hard effort, and zone five above 90 for short maximal bursts.
These boundaries are a convention, not a law of physiology. Laboratories often define zones from lactate or ventilatory thresholds instead, and those personal breakpoints can land above or below the percentage bands. The percentages are simply an accessible approximation when no lab data is available.
The value of zones is that they name intensities so a plan can balance them. Most endurance work belongs in the lower zones, where the body adapts without excessive fatigue, while the upper zones are used sparingly to sharpen speed and power. If your estimated maximum is off, every band shifts with it, so a tested maximum makes the whole system more trustworthy.

Zone 2 is the easy aerobic band, roughly 60 to 70 percent of maximum. It is used for long, conversational sessions that build endurance with little strain.
