Estimate the calories you burn swimming from your weight, the minutes in the water, and the stroke you favour. Different strokes use very different amounts of energy, so the MET value matters a lot here.
Estimate swimming calories by stroke and time.
kcal = MET × weight (kg) × time (hours) freestyle light 5.8 · freestyle fast 9.8 · breaststroke 10.3 · backstroke 4.8 · butterfly 13.8 · treading 3.5 MET
The MET values reflect the effort of each stroke. Continuous laps at speed sit at the high end, while treading water is close to a brisk walk.
| Symbol | Meaning |
|---|---|
| stroke | Swim stroke or activity, which sets the MET value. |
| weight | Your body mass in kilograms. |
| minutes | How long you swam, in minutes. |
A 70 kg swimmer doing breaststroke for 30 minutes burns 10.3 × 70 × 0.5 ≈ 361 kcal. Backstroke at the same time and weight burns only about 168 kcal.
Swimming energy cost depends heavily on the stroke and how hard you swim. Gentle breaststroke sits near 5 to 6 METs, a steady freestyle near 8, and vigorous butterfly or fast laps climb higher still. The calculator applies the MET equation to whichever intensity you pick and multiplies by your time in the water.
Because water carries heat away far faster than air, the body also spends energy on temperature regulation, and cooler water can raise the metabolic cost slightly. Most tables do not separate this effect, so the values already fold in an average condition.
A skilled swimmer moves through the water with less wasted motion, so the same speed costs less energy than it does for a beginner splashing hard. Resting at the wall, treading water, or using a kickboard all sit at different intensities, which is why a single average MET cannot describe every pool session.
Log the minutes actually spent swimming rather than the total pool visit, since time standing in the shallow end is not priced. If your session mixes strokes, split the time and add the segments for a truer total.

It is the most demanding stroke, using the arms, chest, core, and legs together. That full body effort is reflected in its high MET.
