Turn your step count into an estimate of calories burned. The calculator converts steps into distance using your stride length, then applies a walking or running factor to your body weight.
Convert your step count into calories burned.
distance (km) = steps × stride (m) ÷ 1000 kcal = distance × weight (kg) × factor factor: 0.5 walking · 1.0 running
The stride defaults to about 0.415 of your height for walking and 0.5 for running, which are common estimates. A measured stride gives a closer result.
| Symbol | Meaning |
|---|---|
| steps | Your step count. |
| stride | Your stride length in metres. |
| height | Your height in centimetres, used for the default stride. |
| weight | Your body mass in kilograms. |
A 70 kg person with a 0.70 m stride walking 10,000 steps covers 7 km and burns about 7 × 70 × 0.5 = 245 kcal. Running the same steps would burn roughly double.
This calculator bridges step counts and calories in two steps. First it converts steps to distance using your stride length, commonly estimated as about 0.415 times your height, though a measured stride is better. Then it prices that distance with a walking MET or the per kilometre walking cost.
For example, a person 1.75 metres tall has a stride near 0.73 metres, so 10,000 steps is roughly 7.3 kilometres. At a typical walking energy cost that lands in the low hundreds of kilocalories depending on body weight.
Stride length varies with speed and leg length, so a fixed estimate carries error. Steps counted by a wrist device may also miss some motion or log false ones, and slow shuffling steps cost less than purposeful strides, so the same step total can mean different efforts.
Because the method assumes steady walking, activities like climbing stairs, carrying loads, or walking on soft ground are undercounted. Treat the output as a sensible average and adjust your stride and weight inputs for the best fit.

Running costs roughly twice as much energy per kilometre as walking, because each stride lifts the body higher and demands more effort.
