Old grade is removed, new grade replaces it in GPA.
Cumulative GPA is the weighted average of all your grades across every semester. Unlike a semester GPA, your CGPA reflects your entire academic record and is the number employers, graduate schools, and scholarship committees care about.
Average for one term only. Useful for tracking progress but not your final academic record.
Weighted average across all terms. This is what appears on your transcript and matters for admissions.
A single strong semester cannot undo a poor start, and a single bad semester does not erase years of consistent work. Tracking and planning your CGPA early is important.
Combines previous GPA, credits, and all semester courses into one result.
Tells you the exact GPA you need in future courses to reach a target.
Models grade replacement vs grade averaging for retaken courses.
Supports four grading scales (4.0, 4.3, 5.0, 10.0), unlimited semesters, and unlimited courses per semester.
| Scale | Used by | Max GPA | Weighted? |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4.0 Standard | Most US colleges | 4.0 | No |
| 4.3 (A+) | Some Canadian universities | 4.3 | No - A+ built in |
| 5.0 Weighted | US high schools with Honors/AP/IB | 5.0 | Yes |
| 10.0 (CGPA) | India (CBSE, UGC) | 10.0 | No |
CGPA = Total Quality Points / Total Credit Hours
Where Quality Points = Grade Value x Credit Hours for each course
If you have a 3.5 GPA over 60 credits and earn a 3.8 in a new 15-credit semester: CGPA = (3.5 x 60 + 3.8 x 15) / 75 = 3.56.
A 4-credit course counts twice as much as a 2-credit course. High-credit core courses matter more than low-credit electives.
Student with 3.50 GPA over 30 credits, completing a new semester:
Step 1: Previous = 3.50 x 30 = 105.00 quality points
Step 2: Calculus (4cr, A): 16.00 | English (3cr, B+): 9.90 | Physics (4cr, B): 12.00 | History (3cr, A-): 11.10
Step 3: New quality points = 49.00, Credits = 14
Step 4: Total = 154.00 / 44 = 3.50
Old grade removed, replaced entirely by new grade. Most beneficial for GPA.
Both count but are averaged together. Moderate improvement.
Both attempts count toward GPA. Least beneficial.
Use the Grade Replacement tool in the calculator above to model both scenarios.
| Classification | Typical GPA Range | Context |
|---|---|---|
| Summa Cum Laude | 3.90 - 4.00 | Highest honors - top 1-5% |
| Magna Cum Laude | 3.70 - 3.89 | High honors - top 10-15% |
| Cum Laude | 3.50 - 3.69 | Honors - top 20-30% |
| Deans List | 3.50+ (semester) | Per-semester requirement |
| Good Standing | 2.00+ | Minimum to remain enrolled |
| Academic Probation | Below 2.00 | Warning - must improve |
