Colleges differ on whether an A+ earns 4.3 or is capped at 4.0, and on how a repeated course replaces the original grade. Set both policies and the calculator applies your college's rules instead of a generic one.
Plus/minus grading, A+ handling and repeated-course replacement.
| One course per line or comma separated: grade then credit hours — e.g. A 3, B+ 4, A- 3. | |
| Only if your college forgives the first attempt — e.g. C B 3 replaces a C with a B in a 3-credit course. |
GPA = Σ (grade points × credit hours) ÷ Σ credit hours Replacement: new quality points replace (old grade points × credits) for the repeated course
Grade points: A+ 4.3 (or 4.0 when capped), A 4.0, A− 3.7, B+ 3.3, B 3.0, B− 2.7, C+ 2.3, C 2.0, C− 1.7, D+ 1.3, D 1.0, D− 0.7, F 0.
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Grade points | The college's 4.0 or 4.3 value for each letter grade. |
| Credit hours | The credit weight of each course. |
| Replacement grade | The new grade for a repeated course, replacing the old points. |
3.7×3 = 11.1, 3.3×4 = 13.2, 4.0×3 = 12.0. Total 36.3 over 10 credits = 3.63 GPA.
A plus/minus scale adds resolution at both ends of each letter. The differences look small — 0.3 or 0.4 of a point — but across a 15-credit semester they move a GPA by a tenth or more, which is enough to cross an honors threshold.
Because scales differ, a 3.6 at one college is not automatically comparable to a 3.6 at another. Graduate admissions offices typically recompute on their own scale for that reason.
Grade forgiveness is the single fastest way to raise a college GPA: replacing a D in a 4-credit course with a B can lift a cumulative average by several tenths. Policies differ though — some cap the number of forgiven credits, others only forgive the most recent attempt.

Some do, many cap it at 4.0. Check your registrar's grading policy — the toggle here lets you compute both ways and compare.
GPA calculations here use standard unweighted or weighted grade-point arithmetic. The 4.0 unweighted scale and the common A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, F=0 mapping are used unless a page names a different scale. Weighted GPAs and country-specific conversions (for example Pakistan's 4.0/5.0 systems) are approximations for comparison, not official transcripts. Always confirm the scale your school actually uses before relying on a number for admissions or transcripts.
